Teachers and students to become associate governors (25/01/06)
Question: Our governing body is considering inviting teachers and senior students to become "associate governors". Do you know of any pitfalls awaiting us, or of any rules and regulations that may apply before we go any further?

Joan Sallis replies: No catch in this if you are interested and have the time. It is a way of getting more points of view and expertise into committees (rather than the full governing body) or giving experience to potential full governors before they decide to stand. The governing body makes the choice. They may even decide to make over 18s full voting members. The only restriction on associate governors voting is that there must be a majority of full governors present when the votes are taken. Even without being associate governors members of staff are often asked to attend committees to provide expertise on some item of business but in this case they would have no vote and they might only attend for particular items.
