Who is eligibile for community governor? (08/03/06)
Question: Our bursar was a staff governor and his term of office has just finished. He has been asked to continue as a community governor. The now-vacant staff governor position is to be advertised amongst non-teaching staff. Can a member of the non-teaching staff be a community governor?

Joan Sallis replies: The simple answer is no. The regulations specifically prohibit anyone who is eligible to be a staff governor from becoming a community governor. It would not in any case be right. Staff can have up to one-third of seats on the governing body and the community governor category is designed to bring in people with a more detached view to the school from all the interests which make up the community it serves. It would be quite in order for the bursar to attend suitable meetings as an observer by invitation, but that is up to the governors.
