Preparing for my first governor role (08/03/06)
Question: I am about to embark on my first role as a governor, within a special school. I want to make sure I know what is expected of me before I start. What would you advise?

Joan Sallis replies: I assume that you are to be community governor, perhaps someone with personal or professional interest and knowledge of the kind of learning problems likely to be encountered in the school, though that is not an automatic requisite. Basically a community governor is either someone with a strong interest in education or a community-minded lay person who wants to make a contribution and sees the school as a rich opportunity. If you have had no experience either as a school governor or in education, that is not a problem. There are lots of simple guides on the work of governors and how to be a good one (I’ve written about six) and if you are not in the special needs field professionally you might like to look for books about the most common problems catered for in such a school. Ask the head, or your local governor training team in the local education office about this.
