Books about school governors for reception age children (06/04/06)
Question: Can you recommend a text that explains to reception age children the role of school governors? I am the link governor to a reception class and would like to "read" them a picture book about school governors.

Joan Sallis replies: I’m sorry but as far as I know literature about governors has not got down to that age group, though I like to think some of my guides are very simple. Perhaps you could write something yourself based on easy statements about the government deciding that every school should have a group, with some parents, teachers and friendly neighbours of the school, to take an interest in it, keep the building in good condition, keep an eye on its progress and make decisions about how it is run. You could give examples like how classes are made up, what subjects are taught beyond the basics, on rules and discipline, and illustrate your little book with perhaps some pictures from your school’s web-site and photographs of governors if they will donate them. You don’t need great computer skills. I shouldn’t be too ambitious in the content, some concepts are a little difficult, but I do understand how you feel. When I go into school to hear reading for instance, I feel the need to explain who I am.
