Yet another Window Box from RM? Indeed, but this is no rehash of a tried and trusted formula; the Window Box Open offers many improvements and curriculum resources.
Why "Open"? Now you can configure the WB software and hardware yourself before purchasing. If anything the package typifies what has become an important modus operandi for RM: listening to educators and responding to teacher-feedback.
For starters, ClassMate (version 5) continues to offer all the security teachers require but with more flexibility and ease of use. Indeed the Window Box retains all the benefits of its predecessors, including that lovely software package (much of which has been enhanced through teacher feedback). There are three flavours:
- RM Window Box Open (£195) suitable for 5-7 years, comprising 20 applications for teaching the curriculum.
- RM Window Box Plus Open (£295) the KS2 version comprising the above plus an extra four applications specifically for teaching the modelling and music parts of the curriculum.
- RM Window Box Discovery Open (£495) comprising same titles as the RM Window Box Plus with extra control software and monitoring hardware (note: as this one includes £150 Logit Explorer data logger, only £349 is eligible for purchase with eLCs).
RM Explorer maintains the familiar user interface, improving pupils' file management and interaction with ICT whilst new versions of LogIT Lab and Logotron's Junior Control Insight software have been added. RM continue to provide schools the path to move their ICT resources forward by offering the means to include new Window Boxes to existing SchoolShare Systems and Store Box SchoolShare Systems. Through RM Explorer customers can also ensure that all their Window Boxes have a consistent user interface and both pupils and teachers can "see" their own specified areas.
However, for me it is the improvement made within the SoftEase family viz: Studio CP, which makes the difference. From the Clip Art Library and vastly improved on-screen manuals to the direct links to the resources and materials on the SoftEase website, this whole suite has taken a big step forward making it, for me, the definite software toolset for primary aged children. In addition, WB Open includes an Activity Browser with loads of activities, worksheets and teaching resources to hand.
With the Window Box Open RM has continued to provide schools with a secure system which is now totally configurable and more curriculum-friendly than ever before. A definite "thumbs-up" from me.
