X!PSTER is easy-to-use, stop-motion animation software that comes with sound effects and soundtracks. Stop-frame animation is when a film or video camera is used to take just one frame at a time, then the subject is moved a little, then another shot is taken... and so on, and so on. Claymation is the most popular example with animations like Creature Comforts, Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run. Unlike other software, which “stitches together” previously gathered frames, X!PSTER captures your movie frame by frame in true animation style. You can even record your own voice directly into X!PSTER to add to your movie. Using a simple and cheap USB web-cam, pupils of all ages can create their own stop-frame animations or motion pictures.
X!PSTER’s works with both Mac and PC web-cameras and DV cameras with video capture hardware on PC and exports movies in Apple Quicktime format. It comes with a library of sound effects and soundtracks. However, more usefully, pupils can record their own sounds and voices within the application. It even allows multiple projects to be combined into a single movie. The package includes comprehensive teacher materials and there’s an additional library of add-ons to use in conjunction with X!PSTER. These include:
- XIP ImageMaker: to compose characters and backgrounds from an image library. The results can be printed out and used to produce animations with X!PSTER and a web-camera.
- XIP SuperSounds: sounds and music can easily be added to animations from within the X!PSTER application. The result can be exported as a QuickTime movie.
- XIP MovieDirector (Vol 1): A CD which provides a general understanding of the keys to making great movies such as picking the right genre, creating a solid story, developing characters, proper lighting, composing the look of a scene and the all-important sound and visual special effects.
Stop-frame animation is the basis of all animation techniques and with (itls)X!PSTER pupils can achieve excellent results from extremely simple ideas and props. Highly recommended.
