Governor ready to be a deputy head? (05/05/06)
Question: I have two years’ teaching experience in a two-teacher primary school in Wales, and have been a member of the governing body for all that time. I have taken charge of the school for a month, been co-ordinator of five subjects (two core), and have been in charge of admissions. When should I start applying for deputy head posts?

Joan Sallis replies: This sounds to me like an excellent range of experience already for a teacher aspiring to be a deputy in a school as small as yours or not much bigger, so the short answer may be ‘right now’. But in larger schools those making the appointment may well feel that a deputy should have had relevant experience in one of comparable size and this could be sound policy in the context of your whole career. It isn’t just a difference of degree. All I am saying is be ambitious but watch that the next move does not restrict you too seriously in the future.
