Can a staff-governor chair a governors' committee? (06/06/06)
Question: I have been a parent-governor for three years and chair of the Standards, Teaching and Learning Committee for the past two. I now work part-time at the school and so am standing down as a parent-governor. I have been asked to stand as staff-governor and would be pleased to do so. Can I continue as chair of the committee? Because of governing body re-structuring, there are many new governors and so there is no one else able to take this position.

Joan Sallis replies: Sorry but no member of staff may chair a governors’ committee. That is in statutory regulations.
