Agencies will not register me without a QTS (06/06/06)
Question: I have more than 20 years' teaching experience both here and overseas. I have been teaching IT and Business in Post-16 setting in this country since 1993. I am currently waiting for my PGCE application to be processed to enable me obtain the QTS status. In the mean time I tried to register with Protocol Agencies and was told that they will not register me because I have not got QTS. I am currently unemployed and have no idea what to do since the only thing I want to do is teach. Is it right for an agency to refuse to register an experienced teacher?

Joan Sallis replies: It may seem hard, but agencies are independent and make their rules accordingly. It is a business and diminishing risk may be seen as important. But schools themselves are commonly appointing at this time of year subject to the grant of qualified status in strong cases, and some independent schools might be interested on a temporary basis. I hope you do not have to wait too long for formal accreditation.
