Following the success of its predecessor, RM has introduced an eco-friendly version of the RM One, the Ecoquiet.
The original RM One was introduced as a next-generation computer for schools and proved very successful. The introduction of the RM Ecoquiet looks set follow in its footsteps.
The key feature of the RM One is its all-in-one design; the computer is considerably smaller than a standard monitor and yet houses the screen and all of the PC's components in one unit. All of which makes it ideal for classrooms because it saves on space and cables. The Ecoquiet is even more suited to the classroom, with its near-silent operation and energy efficiency.
RM claims the Ecoquiet is 14dB quieter than a standard PC. Even at maximum CPU power it still remains very quiet at only 26.9dB. The general gist for classrooms is less distraction and reduced teaching stress.
But the best thing about the Ecoquiet is its energy efficiency. It runs, on average, 100W below a standard PC and claims to be two thirds more energy efficient. This works out at a saving of around £100 a year per machine - which could make a big difference across a whole classroom full of kit.
Thankfully, the key features of the RM One remain. These include robustness through anti-graffiti paint and a hardened protective screen, and security through desk-bolting functionality and a cable clamp. It is very easy to set up and, although not the most powerful of PCs, it should cope with all of the tasks required in a classroom.
There a few small flaws: like the lack of a floppy drive; or the volume dial which isn't particularly in sync with actual changes in speaker volume; and the rear ports aren't that easy to access.
