Can a headteacher become a teaching staff governor? (30/06/06)
Question: Can a primary headteacher serve on the board of governors as a teaching staff governor?

Joan Sallis replies: I can’t find any special prohibition of this but the regulations do refer to ‘teaching and support staff governors’ and to election as the means by which they get there and I take this as acceptance that the head is not meant to be included, especially as the head is a governor anyway in his or her own right, and as head teacher. I would regard ‘doubling up’ by trying to serve as a teacher governor as highly undesirable and it is fitting that teaching and other staff should speak from their own perspective.
