No quorum, no head (03/07/06)
Question: At the recent ratification meeting for a new head teacher when 2 governors arrived for a meeting ,which had been brought forward, because the Chair thought a decision would be made earlier than expected. One governor said she disagreed with the candidate at which she was told by he SDA that the decision had been made and it had to be ratified. When she asked how the decision was reached she was told the candidate would be told first. Since then various people have suggested that this was not a ratification was it or not? If not what should happen now? The staff want to call a vote of no confidence.

Joan Sallis replies: Oh dear, that again. No, a vote of confidence doesn’t seem to be the right answer somehow. It’s simple. No decision could be made at that meeting because it was nowhere near quorate so no head has been appointed yet. Why wasn’t the meeting fixed with proper notice with a 3 line whip sort of tone? Surely your governors are interested in appointing a new head? They don’t get he chance often. Another meeting has to be called with a good hope of being quorate and the Chair must see to it. That’s all. Hurry up – the term is almost over. I’m sorry but all this smacks of gross incompetence somewhere. You could lose your preferred candidate because of it.
