No training for child protection governor role (19/07/06)
Question: I have been appointed child protection governor recently and have been informed by the LEA that there is no training for this role in the foreseeable future. I have asked for any information which might help but nothing has been forthcoming. Have you any advice as I would like to know what is required of me before I approach the teacher responsible for child protection in the school?

Joan Sallis replies: Looking after a particular bit of school curriculum or activity is generally informal and impossible to define in individual terms and it would be unusual to have ‘training’ in the regular LEA sense for this in detail. The first requirement is to have a rough knowledge of the law and of the school’s practice, if it is child protection or racial equality or sex education, as distinct from literacy, maths or languages. There will be a deputy or experienced teacher with informal responsibility at the very least in these cases and I’m sure he or she would be very happy to discuss the kind of issues that arise with you. You will not be expected to be a mine of information, just to understand the principles and common practices and have interest and a watchful eye.
