Can we have two co-chairs of governors? (19/07/06)
Question: Can we have two governors acting as co-Chair of Governors instead of a single chair? We are in a difficult time and no one person feels they want to steer us through the next 18 months alone, but we may get support if we can share the duties and responsibilities.

Joan Sallis replies: There is no provision for this in the law. It isn’t prohibited but the legal duties are always associated with ‘the chair’. I don’t personally like the idea because one can share tasks, but sharing responsibility is not so easy, and also it is a less straightforward relationship with the head. I think you would be better off having one nominal chair but delegating some major responsibilities to the vice-chair and perhaps tasks to other experienced governors. In some schools the burden of chairing has become daunting but to some extent this is within our power to alter. An open governing body where information and tasks are shared - where the law allows - can make a big difference.
