How to elect a staff governor
Question about the procedure for appointing governors
Question: I am a staff governor of a small school and am interested to know what the correct procedure is to elect a staff governor?

Joan Sallis replies: There is no model procedure. The management of the process is the prerogative of the governing body though in practice it is quite common for the head teacher to organise it. If there are any concerns, however, about the openness or fairness of the procedures the governors can intervene, of course.

It is important that all staff are properly informed of the opportunity, that similarly all have a chance to vote, that the counting is scrupulous (a sensible head will bring in a witness), and that all staff and governors are told the result. Teaching and support staff vote together for all vacancies where there are vacancies for both.
