Will acting deputy head face redundancy? (02/08/06)
Question: Our deputy is leaving in July and is the only member of staff to do so. We are also reluctantly having to reduce the number of teaching staff next year by one. A senior member of staff has been asked to be acting deputy in September for one term, but what would happen if, when the position is advertised, another person is appointed from outside? Will someone be facing redundancy? This is obviously not a situation the school wants to face. Can the senior member be acting deputy over a longer term?

Joan Sallis replies: An interesting question. I have had no experience of this situation so what I say is just off the cuff. It could be that an acting post happened to remain so longer than intended because of difficulty making a suitable new appointment at once, but you cannot really plan for that to happen when it is a head or deputy – in other words you must take steps to advertise and fill the post permanently as soon as you can. If the present acting head applied and were appointed on merit it could mean that it solved your redundancy issue (I left a doubt there since if subject / experience made this totally unsuitable you might be forced to seek a replacement and then separately consider the redundancy in accordance with the accepted procedures).
