Governing body's involvement in internal promotion
Can the headteacher promote internally to the post of assistant headteacher without the governing body's involvement?
Question: Is the headteacher able to promote internally to the post of assistant headteacher (even if it is a temporary post for one year) without the governing body's involvement? I believe the assistant headteacher is a member of the leadership group and therefore the governing body should be involved in the appointment but the Guide to the Law, Chapter 9 6, 7, is unclear and mentions head and deputy head but not the assistant head?

Joan Sallis replies: The permanent appointment of an assistant headteacher, who is a member of the leadership group, should certainly be subject to the same processes as head and deputy, with public advertisement, a panel of governors, etc. Temporary appointments are a somewhat grey area as you say, and the time the prescribed processes would take is a practical barrier to replicating the procedure which applies to a permanent appointment. All the same, a wise head would ensure the fullest possible participation of governors in the decision.
