Additional payments for classroom teachers (TLRs & SENs)

Classroom teachers who take on extra responsiblity could be awarded a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) payment. These TLRs replaced the old Management Allowances (MAs) at the end of 2005.

To get a TLR2 payment teachers have to show they have a specific responsibility which focuses on teaching and learning and needs professional skills and judgement. This responsibility must be one which is not expected of all classroom teachers and it should be clearly defined in your job description.

To get a TLR1 payment you must meet all the criteria for TLR2 and be a line manager for a significant number of people.

To find out more about how TLRs are allocated read our TLR frequently asked questions article.
