Charity launches survey on attacks on teachers
Teacher Support Network response to violence and disruption figures
In response to figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats revealing there were 1,128 attacks on teachers between 2000 and 2006, Patrick Nash, Chief Executive of Teacher Support Network said:

“Teacher Support Network’s experience of working with thousands of teachers every year has shown us that, while rare, violent attacks can have a devastating impact.

“Many teachers who have experienced violence told us that they have suffered severe stress, anxiety and a fear of going to school. In some extreme cases, this has led to long-term sickness absence and even ill-health retirement.

“Teacher Support Network is repeating its violence and disruption survey this month to gauge whether any improvement has occurred in pupil behaviour since 2005 given the recommendations of the behaviour task force and the subsequent Education and Inspections Act 2006.

“Teacher Support Network signposts all teachers facing violence to the unions, but any teachers who have experienced such incidents, whether it be low-level disruption or physical assault, can contact our free counselling and coaching services for advice, information and support at any time of the day or night.”

The survey will run until February 23 2006 at the Teacher Support Network website.
