Teachers' pay "has been cut", says NUT
Teachers' pay is falling in real terms, says the National Union of Teachers.

And, according to its' General Secretary, Steve Sinnott, the NUT has made good progress for part-time teachers, but “teachers' pay has fallen below inflation; in effect a pay cut."

The gloomy outlook for teachers' pay was dealt a further blow with news that the 2007 remit for the School Teachers' Review Body (STRB) did not include the central issue for pay.

The STRB report did contain many important recommendations which are briefly outlined below. For further details, read the February edtion of NUT News (see link bellow).

* The Inflation Trigger

The Government accepted a recommended mechanism which can trigger a review of teachers’ pay in the event of inflation varying from the recommended increase.

* Performance Pay

The Government has welcomed the principle of formal links between pay and performance.

* Part-Time Teachers

The Government has accepted the need for a new system for paying part-time teachers.

* SEN Allowances

Special Educational Needs (SEN) allowances remain at risk. The STRB has asked for further evidence about their functions.

* Wales

THE STRB and the Government have agreed that Wales should remain within the current framework of pay and conditions for England and Wales.
