Teachers top stress league
Teachers beat doctors and air traffic controllers to the title of Britain's most stressful job, a survey found today.
About 40% of people questioned for the research said they thought teachers were under the most stress at work.

Pressure to get good exam results, dealing with unruly pupils and working long hours increase the stress which school staff endure.

Leeds-based Waterfall Spa, which conducted the survey, reported that more stressed-out women teachers were visiting to help them relax during the school holidays.

Pamela Petty, managing director of Waterfall Spa, said: "Previous research at the spa showed that a high percentage of our customers note stress as their reason for visiting us and we wanted to find out which professions people view as the most stressful.

"Teaching was the overwhelming top choice and we have certainly seen evidence that teachers are more stressed than ever with far more female teachers choosing to visit us over the school holidays."

Teachers' union NASUWT said 81% of its members reported in a recent survey that they were suffering from work-related stress.

A spokesman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families said: "Teaching is a rewarding, but also a challenging job.

"We have therefore increased average pay by 18% in real terms and introduced a range of measures to ease the burden on teachers.

"These include giving every teacher half a day a week outside the classroom to plan and prepare lessons, slashing the bureaucratic burden on schools, removing dozens of admin tasks from teachers and capping the amount of time they can be asked to cover for absent colleagues."
