• You are 15 questions away from winning £1million. How well do you know your Fractions, Decimals and Percentages?
• What is it? - “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” teaching resources are fairly common in the world of maths, but that is simply for the reason that they are very popular with students and very effective. This particular resource contains fifteen questions on the topic of fractions, decimals and percentages, covering concepts such as equivalence, simplification and percentage of an amount. Your students will be desperate to get to the million pound question, and not realise they will have taken on 15 well-chosen, differentiated questions on a fairly painful topic along the way.
• How could it be used? - “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” activities are ideally suited for starters or plenaries. One option is to get one student to the front of the class to play the game and have the rest of the class acting as the audience. The problem with that, of course, is that only one student is actively engaged in the lesson. It might be better to divide the class up into two or three teams, give them alternate questions, and the team that walks away with the highest amount of money at the end is the winner. Each team must then choose whether to take on the question or say “well, I came here with nothing, I’ve had a great time, I think I’ll take the money”. And best of all, you get to say “Is that your final answer?”
