Capacity, a TESiboard Numeracy Collection
As with other aspects of measuring, pupils will initially use non-standard units for exploring capacity, e.g. small yoghurt pots to fill a jug, before moving on to measure in litres and millilitres by learning to accurately read scales.
These interactive resources begin with using non-standard units (a cup or a jug), to start children thinking about choosing appropriate units in relation to size. The further resources look at whole litres and parts of litres, including estimating capacity then testing predictions.
Capacity
- Pupils choose the most suitable vessel, the smaller cup or the larger jug, to fill a selection of different size containers.
- Pupils fill up a litre bottle, using smaller amounts of water (in ml) to add up to the total. Each bottle filled is also then displayed as a sum, e.g. 300ml + 300ml + 400ml = 1000ml or 1 litre.
- Pupils use a litre jug to fill a variety of containers of different shapes and sizes. They estimate first, then test their predictions.
- Work out the capacity of each container by pouring it into the measuring jug and working out the value using the scale.
