Secondary Maths Collection – Maths Top Trumps

As a child (and I am using “child” in the loosest sense of the word – my friend got me a pack for my last birthday), I loved playing Top Trumps. It seemed completely natural at the time to plunge all of your efforts and energies into trying to take that one card needed from your opponent to finish them off. Tactics, guile, and a bit of luck all combined to make this a playground classic.
Laura Rees Hugheshas brilliantly managed to bring the spirit of Top Trumps into the Maths Classroom. She has created games for a whole range of maths topics. Best of all, they are differentiated, so all students can play and be challenged. My personal favourite is the BIDMAS one – I have never seen students so determined to understand what operation has to come first.
Laura explains why she loves these resources and how to use them:
“Top trumps are a guaranteed way to get your students doing loads of work without them even realising it! The pupils should know how to play already but in case you don’t have a look at the instructions. You can use them as a starter to refresh prior learning or as a main activity for consolidation. The cards are differentiated by colour so your students can select which pack is most suited to their level which makes sure they are appropriately supported or challenged. They are easily adaptable so you can change the questions to almost any topic and the pictures on them can be swapped for unsuspecting staff members or students! “
Instructions:
- Pupils work in pairs and select two colours to play with (green and orange for the more able, orange and red for the weaker)
- They share the cards out between them
- The first pupil works out the questions on their top card; they then ‘challenge’ their partner in one of the four categories
- Their partner must work out their score in that category
- The highest scorer wins the other persons card
- If it is a draw both cards go in the middle and the winner of the next round wins those too
- Pupils continue taking it in turns to ‘challenge’ until one person wins all the cards
- Generally this can last around 15 minutes and not a single student will be off task!
