Mathematical Treasure Hunts are a fantastic way to engage the students in meaningful revision, or to test and consolidate understanding of a topic. It never ceases to amaze me how much a little competition can bring to life the most lethargic and reluctant of students, and a race against time around the classroom to find all the correct answers can certainly do that.
Laura Rees Hugheshas created some amazingly high quality Treasure Hunt resources and kindly uploaded them all to TES. They cover a whole host of topics, and are suitable for all ages and ability levels.
Laura explains why she loves these resources and how to use them:
We all have those students who look as though they are ready to drop off to sleep no matter what you do; one way to get them energised is by using a treasure hunt! Like match cards but stuck around the room pupils have to ‘hunt’ for the answer to find their next question (see more detailed instructions below). Guaranteed to get them doing loads of questions in a very short space of time and with a smile on their face. Treasure Hunts are easy to adapt to any topic with all the benefits of match cards but with lesson photocopying! All of these are differentiated into two levels so pupils can select the level of challenge or support. Not just for key stage three, my key stage four and five classes ‘love’ these and that’s their words not mine!
Instructions:
- Print out the cards, cut them up and stick them around the classroom
- Pupils select the colour they will follow, amber has more support and green has more challenge
- Pupils choose a ticket to start at and answer the ‘question’ on that ticket
- They write down the answer
- To find the next question they have to ‘hunt’ for the ticket with their ‘answer’ at the top.
- Continue until they get back to the ticket where they started (should have 10 answers at this point)
- Check the answers and give a prize for the first to finish keeping them motivated!
