#### TES Secondary maths resource collections

Collection Author: Colleen Young, - Maths Secondary Panel Member

As many students have misconceptions concerning negative numbers, a variety of approaches in teaching is important. This collection includes various types of resource, some requiring IT, others which students could use themselves or would be useful on the school virtual learning environment.

#### Top 10 Resources:

Sumdog: Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers

• Sumdog offers great games to practise subtracting positive and negative numbers. Very clear instructions are given in the lesson plan for teachers and for students in the handout.
• Further resources are available from Sumdog

N9 Evaluating directed number statements

• An outstanding activity from the DfE Standards Unit. This really makes students think about operations with negative numbers. As with all the activities in this series, comprehensive teachers’ notes are provided.

Order of Operations

• This resource would make an excellent starter or plenary offering questions on order of operations that will also require students to be able to work with negative numbers. The settings allow teachers to choose the complexity of the questions.

Arithmagons

• These arithmagon activities can be used for many operations, including with negative numbers.

More Number Pyramids

• These number pyramids offer another opportunity for thinking about negative numbers.

Bingo – Negative Numbers (four operations)

• An excel spreadsheet offering a Bingo game with questions on negative numbers. The spreadsheet includes the Bingo cards, the questions and a worksheet with a clear display of the questions for the interactive whiteboard.

Negative Numbers Magic Squares

• This resource offers an excellent interactive whiteboard activity and accompanying worksheet which requires students to complete magic squares, including negative numbers.

Notes - Number - 8. Negative Numbers

Negative Numbers

• In this resource the notes on negative numbers have been converted to PowerPoint slides so they can be downloaded and adapted if required. The excellent spread sheet can be used to generate a never ending supply of questions and answers on the four operations using negative numbers.

Negative Numbers (MEP – Year 7 – Unit 15)

• CIMT offer not just textbook chapters but also investigative activities, mental tests on the topic, assessments and teachers notes.

Ping Pong

• We’ll end with a game of ping pong! This is a simple idea which could be used for many topics and requires no resources. A rule is chosen by the leader who then ‘hits’ a number to a chosen child, the pupil has to ‘hit’ back the appropriate number. Any operation with negative numbers could be used in this activity.
