Teacher Exchange Programme

Career | Published 3 April, 2011

Let someone else take your job, while you take theirs and experience life abroad.

Ever wondered what it is like to teach abroad, but feel a bit worried about venturing out on your own? The safety net of a teacher exchange programme could be just the thing for you. You won’t have to give up your job or your salary; you simply do a temporary job swap with a teacher from abroad. At the end of it all, you return to your job and they return to theirs.

There are a number of organisations offering teacher exchange programmes; each one will have slightly different terms and conditions. Here are a few to get started:

UK/US Fulbright teacher exchange programme, through which UK teachers of any subject and any phase can swap jobs for a year with a US counterpart. Funding is available to cover travel costs. There are also work-shadowing opportunities for head teachers, managers and specialists in education (3-6 weeks). Find out more http://www.britishcouncil.org/learning-fulbright-what-is-fulbright-uk-us-teacher-exchange.htm

The League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers run a variety of exchange visits, some for as little as three weeks, some for a term, some for a year. The aim is to develop links; gather material for course work; and to develop cultural awareness and language skills. Teachers, heads and administrators can apply. So far LECT has arranged exchanges with 25 countries in five continents, including Australia and Canada.
Find out more http://www.lect.org.uk/

Teacher International Professional Development programmes (TIPD) are funded by the DfES. There are essentially two schemes: LEA-led study visits from a week to 10 days for groups of teachers - applications must go through the LEA - and school-determined study visits which are handled by the Specialist Schools Trust and which must involve a minimum of two teachers.

Goldsmiths mid-career refreshment grants. Awards of up to £3,000 are available to primary or secondary school teachers for foreign travel to enhance personal development. Find out more http://www.thegoldsmiths.co.uk/education/grants_for_teach.htm

Through the Central Bureau modern languages teachers in full-time jobs in secondary schools can swap jobs with a teacher in another part of Europe - Austria, France, Germany, Spain or Switzerland. The exchange, during which you take over the other teacher’s timetable, lasts for anything from three weeks to a year. Find out more http://www.centralbureau.org.uk/

  • I am a British citizen and a secondary school teacher of ESL English, and learning support at an internationally recognized private boarding school in beautiful Northern Vermont, New England, USA. We are located three hours from Boston and Montreal, less than an hour's drive from both the White Mountains, and the Green Mountains, with excellent options for both hill-walking and skiing. St. Johnsbury Academy hosts international students, students from around the USA, and local students. The school has a vibrant and diverse staff, including teachers from other countries, making for a warm and caring community. My American wife (also a teacher of English and Creative Writing) and I are hoping to bring our young twin daughters to live in the UK for the 2014-15 academic year. I am planning to teach while my wife is on sabbatical; either or both of our positions in the US could be filled through an exchange. We live in the most photographed historic village in Vermont in a fully-renovated, three-bedroom 1840 home next to a brook with beautiful gardens. If interested, please contact me at: jmackenzie@stjacademy.org.

  • Hi,
I am a literacy/numeracy tutor at an FE college in London, UK and looking for a 1 year exchange possibility from September 2014. I was accepted for the Fullbright exchange programme a couple of years ago but there were no equivalent applicants at that time. I do also have ESOL/Tefl experience and qualifications. I have a 2 bedroomed flat very centrally accessible which could be part of the deal, Please email me if you have any ideas/suggestions of how I can do a sabbatical year abroad on kayehawthorne@hotmail.com. Thanks

  • Good evening! I am a primary school teacher in a local school in Fife, Scotland. I have worked at my current school for 7 years. My experience is mainly in upper school (P4-7). As much as I love my class and school, I really fancy a change! Would anybody be interested in an exchange? I am keen to work/experience life in New Zealand. I would be happy to participate in a house swap. I live in a 2 bed flat in the local area. My school is only a 10 minute drive away. It would be easy to travel to and from work via public transport. I'm looking forward to hearing from someone: mazzydon@yahoo.com

  • Hello!
I am a Physical Education teacher looking for an exchange in Australia starting January 2015. I have been working for nearly 10 years now in a great secondary school in the North of Scotland (the most beautiful part of Scotland!?! :-)) I have a 4 bedroom house and am keen on a house swap also. The house is a 2 minute walk to the school and is in a beautiful location overlooking the sea (yes our school has beautiful views also!), whilst only being a 10min walk to the main town. Please contact me if you are interested in this exchange at smevster@yahoo.co.uk

My American wife (also a teacher of English and Creative Writing) and I are hoping to bring our young twin daughters to live in the UK for the 2015-16 academic year.
