Unit 3: Poetry and drama (literary heritage)

This resource pack has been developed to support WJEC GCSE English Literature. However, it can be used and adapted across all of the awarding bodies for which the text is on the syllabus.

  • Overview of the TES English teaching pack on WJEC’s poetry and drama (literary heritage) controlled assessment for 2012. Generic and sample task titles (foundation and higher tier) for conflict and male / female relationships. Romeo and Juliet – General Resources

Plot, Character & Relationships

  • Introduction to the pack together with generic and specific tasks. Also cloze procedure, card sort and linking activities on plot, character and character relationships in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Pre-reading Activity – Love

  • Pre-reading activity on love and short activity to focus on the demands of the question.

Romeo and Juliet – Male / Female Relationships

Our First Introduction

  • Domino comprehension and quote activity on both characters from the start of the play. Romeo in Act 1, Scene 1 and Juliet in Act 1, Scene 2.

Love, Sex & Marriage

  • Activities and worksheets exploring Romeo and love and Juliet and marriage. Also a keeping track worksheet to record quotes from other characters.

Act 1, Scene 5 (Part One)

  • Activities and worksheets for pre-reading, prediction and writing on Act 1, Scene 5.

Act 1, Scene 5 (Part Two)

  • Activities and worksheets on Act 1, Scene 5. Cloze procedure and comprehension and analysis.

Act 1, Scene 5 (Part Three)

  • General comprehension on Act 1, Scene 5.

Re-writing Act 2, Scene 2

  • Activities and worksheets for re-writing Act 2, Scene 2 as a short sketch or sonnet.

Act 2, Scene 2 – Iambic Pentameter

  • Activities and worksheets on iambic pentameter.

Act 2, Scene 2 – Ideas, Images & Imagery

  • Activities and worksheets on images and imagery (light and the cosmos) in Act 2, Scene 2.

Performing Act 2, Scene 2

  • Performing Act 2, Scene 2. Very short extract. Different performance ideas included to encourage personal responses.

Poetry - Male / female relationships

‘Sonnet 43’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (higher tier)

  • Pre-reading and prediction Internet research task and wordle activity, a bar graph for exploring word frequency, A to Z of ‘Sonnet 43’, differentiated task on rhyme, collapsed poem for exploring use of punctuation plus further worksheets exploring the poem’s techniques and concepts.

‘Sonnet 43’ - Audio MP3 Readings

  • Two audio files intended to aid study of ‘Sonnet 43’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. One is a straight forward reading of the poem (no sfx), and one a reading with sound effects.

‘Cousin Kate’ by Christina Rossetti (foundation tier)

  • Pre-reading ranking activity and prediction discussion on the title, speaking & listening task on iambic pentameter, visual response task on images and imagery, an active learning ‘quote quest’ on the poem’s verbs, group work on lexical sets plus worksheets for further close analysis.

‘Cousin Kate - Audio MP3 Readings

  • Two audio files intended to aid study of ‘Cousin Kate’ by Christina Rossetti. One is a straight forward reading of the poem (no sfx), and one a reading with sound effects.
