resources | Published in TES magazine on 30 March, 2012 | By: James Abella

Are you finding it hard to make a dull topic seem exciting? Why not use Cartoon Story Maker from the Victoria state government in Australia, which allows you to make quick and easy comic strips, for free (see www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/games/cartoon).

What is it?

A downloadable application where you can choose from a selection of 19 backgrounds and numerous main, supporting and minor characters to create your own story. You can add speech bubbles, information or title boxes and audio clips, as well as importing backgrounds or foregrounds if you are feeling creative.

How is it useful?

This simple-to-use program can be employed in any subject. Why not get students involved in the creation process? They can pick a character as a class mascot, who can introduce each key topic in a new edition of your comic strip. Pupils can also make their own comic strips for revision.
