The British School Manila is a well-established co-educational day school founded in 1976 , with just two classrooms and 32 students. It has now grown to more than 835 pupils, representing 39 nationalities, the top 5 being: 33% UK, 23% Philippines, 9% USA, 8% Australia, 6% Canada. The school offers an education that nurtures the different strengths and talents of our students, who are exposed to a broad and balanced curriculum. The school provides the highest quality British education, following the English National Curriculum from Nursery to Year 9. Children are prepared for National Curriculum Tests (NCTs) at age 7 and 11, (I)GCSE at 16 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma at 18.
Class sizes are small with a maximum of 20 students. Each child is encouraged to develop at their own rate, benefitting from a high level of individual teacher attention and motivation. Emphasis is placed on self-discipline within a family atmosphere, providing an ideal learning environment for children of all nationalities. We are proud to uphold the high standard of the British education system and we take full advantage of our multi-cultural setting. To achieve full potential, BSM students will become independent critical thinkers, problem solvers, decision makers, effective communicators, team players, responsible risk takers, and active participants in a global society. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and also a member of FOBISSEA and IAPS.
We pride ourselves on the ‘warmth’ which prevails across all age groups and all sectors of the community, and work hard to maintain that ethos. When a child joins the school so does their family. Every child matters and every family is important. We are focused on the quality of teaching and learning and expect the highest standards in everything we do. Children, our students, are at the centre of what we do as we strive to enable all students to reach their full potential. If they succeed then we succeed.
Our broad curriculum provides a balanced coverage of the arts, humanities and sciences, expressive arts and physical education, whilst ensuring that students develop a wide range of skills and techniques together with creativity and physical well-being. It is flexible but rigorous enough to challenge all abilities at every level of the school. Up to Year 11 teaching and learning is structured around the requirements outlined by the National Curriculum of England, adapting and amending our curriculum to suit our students’ needs.
We know that once our students have left BSM, they will enter a very competitive world and will need academic ability, personal skills and a positive character in order to be successful and happy. The Post-16 Programme for Years 12 and 13 prepares students for college/university entrance and for future careers. It is based on the International Baccalaureate Programme philosophy of international understanding, holistic education and communication. The IB Diploma is an internationally accepted qualification highly regarded by universities and employers around the world. A full counselling service for college and university placement is provided at BSM. Where students are guided and supported in their choices and given individual help.
Extra-curricular activities are also extremely important, and over 70 activities are offered, catering for a very wide range of sporting, creative and artistic talents. We also promote service to others including the Creative, Action and Service programme (CAS). Membership of the Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia (FOBISSEA) provides opportunities for inter school Music, Sporting and Academic events.
Academic achievement at the school is very high compared to both UK state and private sectors. At KS2 this year, Level 5 was achieved by 61% of pupils in English, 54% in Maths and 73% in science.
The (I)GCSE examination results place the school amongst the very best in the world and the top 5% in the UK with 100% achieving grades A*-C. BSM is an EDEXEL and Cambridge International teaching centre.
BSM students regularly gain IB Diploma scores higher than the world average. In 2011, the average points score of 33 measures up well against word average of 29 points. BSM had one student achieve 43 points, placing him into the top 0.7 % of students in the world. 3 of our students are in the top 5.6% with a diploma score of 40 points or higher.
Our teachers are UK or Commonwealth trained and the majority have a background in Education in the United Kingdom.
The British School Manila Parent Teacher association (BSPTA) is very active and involved in the daily life of the school. Consisting of both expatriate and local families, the parent body as a whole is articulate and informed. This results in a home environment in which the students learn to appreciate the importance and enjoyment of education.
The school year is divided into 3 terms: Term 1 from August to December, Term 2 from January to March, and Term 3 from April to June.
In September 2001 the school relocated to a new site with state of the art facilities. It is purpose built and impressive, well equipped and spacious. The students are housed in six classroom clusters according to their Key Stage level. Every class room is connected to the school’s internal computer network.
In addition to the classroom clusters, there is a specialist teaching block housing five science laboratories and a technology floor with two networked and internet ready ICT suites.
The library contains a resource room as well as numerous audiovisual aids. To encourage our student’s creative interest, the campus has special arts and design studio with its own kiln. There is also a music and drama auditorium for school productions.
Within the senior students’ classroom cluster there is a new networked technology suite, a drama studio and year 12/13 common room.
Our sports facilities include an 8 lane 25m swimming pool, football pitches, a basketball court and badminton courts. The school also has refectory with its own catering services.
