About Spalding Parish CE Day School

Spalding Parish Church of England Day School

The school is well known by its initials - SPCEDS. These initials have a greater meaning for us than just a way of referring to the school. We use these initials to sum up what the school stands for:

• Success in learning
• Progress through learning
• Commitment to learning
• Enjoyment for learning
• Development by learning
• Success through learning

Each SPCEDS pupil is an individual; each has personal skills, strengths, needs and aspirations. The overall aim is to create a school where children are happy and have a good attitude to work and play, and to provide each child with a primary education matched to his/her aptitude and ability.
The history of SPCEDS covers more than 150 years. Over that period SPCEDS has grown considerably and undergone many developments. Throughout, it has achieved a record of success for its children.
We hope you will wish to be part of the SPCEDS Experience.
What is at the heart of the schools' life? With teachers, governors, children and parents working together, we hope to provide a stimulating but relaxed place in which to learn and grow.
The school is a Christian foundation which has always had strong links with the Parish Church of St Mary and St Nicolas. The intention of the school is to provide a good education within the Christian tradition as it has developed in the Church of England, and also to introduce children to the insights and challenges of the Christian faith.
Most of those who read this are parents or prospective parents of children attending or considering the school. It is our hope that, in being a part of the school family, you will take a full part in the life of the school and that you will take an active and questioning interest in its work.

Mission Statement

Governors and Staff have established a Mission Statement for the school. This sets out the underlining commitment and beliefs of the school and the ideals that are continually being sought.

Spalding Parish Church of England Day School, as a Church of England School, aims:

• To promote Christian values throughout the entire curriculum and to encourage attitudes of mutual respect and responsibility which reflect the Christian ethos of the school
• To promote knowledge and understanding of the Christian Faith and of different world religions and to encourage tolerance, understanding and respect for all people
• To provide through Collective Worship as well as through other activities an environment which will foster the development of faith in each individual
• To establish a high quality of care and concern for all pupils and staff in the school and to enable all to develop to their full potential
• To foster strong links between school, home, parish and wider community, whilst striving to maintain an effective balance between service in the church and service in the community
• To ensure the continued development of the school as a valued part of the community
Through the Governing Body, to make the most effective use of the available financial and physical resources
Recognising its historic foundation, the school will preserve and develop its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the Church at parish and diocesan level.
The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith, and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils.

Church Links

The Parish Church of England Day School is a co-educational primary school taking children in the age range 4 plus to 11 years. It is also an Aided Church of England School. This means that:

• The Governors of the school establish the admission criteria; and

Religious Education and daily assemblies held in the school are in accordance with the teachings of the Church of England. This upholds the rights of Church parents to have their children educated in the faith of the Church, in a Christian atmosphere, within the nurture and family of the Church.

In accordance with Education Acts, parents of other denominations, other faiths or none, can opt to withdraw their children from RE lessons and assemblies (including those held in the Church). A letter requesting withdrawal should be sent to the Head Teacher or Chairman of Governors. It should be noted, however, that in assemblies and Religious Education lessons, different traditions within Christianity, and other faiths, are respected.

This school works closely with the Parish Church of St. Mary and St. Nicolas, Spalding. The clergy take some of the morning assemblies. The children are taken to Church for special services two or three times a term and the school works with the clergy and other members of the Church on special occasions throughout the year.

We look upon our Church School as a continuing co-operative venture between Church and community, and we try to take full advantage of opportunities to enrich our community as well as the lives of our pupils in the name of Christ. Our association with the Parish Church helps to bring to the practice of education specifically Christian insights. As the school works within a Christian framework it encourages the development of caring relationships. It allows the necessary measure of freedom for innovation and experiment balanced by the steadying and secure influence of unchanging Christian values.
