Job overview

2 i/c Art, Barnet

The Compton School is ranked as one of the most successful schools in the country and we were recently congratulated for being one of the top 2% of state schools nationally by the DFE. The Compton has a long established national profile for excellence in teaching, leadership, and for student outcomes and became one of the first 100 National Teaching Schools in 2011. The Headteacher is an experienced system leader and National Leader of Education and received a CBE for services to education in the Queen's Birthday honours list in 2013.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed and inspiring classroom teacher who will help to develop further an already very successful department.  The ability to teach GCSE Photography would be an advantage.  A TLR 2a would be available for a suitably qualified candidate.

In 2013, 89% of students gained A*-C grades in GCSE Art and 89% A*-C grades in GCSE Photography.

The school is creating undergoing an extensive expansion building programme.  As a result of which the Art Department will be relocated into a new Creative Arts Block.  In 2015 we are opening a Sixth Form, which will bring significant opportunities for staff development.

The school is situated just north of the North Circular in Finchley North London

Values and Vision

The Compton School is a welcoming and supportive community. We value the professional autonomy of high-performing staff and understand the different approaches different departments may need to take. We expect high standards from both staff and students. We are a diverse school community in terms of both staff and pupils and therefore welcome applications from anyone who supports our ethos.

Ofsted report

“Teaching in the school is first rate because of the attention to detail teachers pay to planning fascinating lessons. The outstanding teaching encourages pupils to work extremely hard and respond well to all they are asked to do. Standards overall are outstanding. All indicators point to a year-on-year rise in standards. Pupils gain just above average results in English, mathematics and science in the national tests at the end of Year 9, but by the time they reach Y11 their GCSE results are impressive and significantly above average. Pupils' achievement is outstanding because they fully meet their challenging targets and the high expectations set for them.”

Middlesex Learning Trust

The Compton School is the founding school of Middlesex Learning Trust (MLT) – a Multi-Academy Trust consisting of 3 large secondary schools.  The key purpose of MLT is to deliver the best possible education for our students, to enable them to maximise their progress, academically, socially and emotionally, ready to take their place in society as positive and successful adults. The Trust and its schools have a long history of maximising the potential of every child. Within the Trust, there is a palpable commitment to fostering high aspirations in all students in order to secure the very best outcomes for them regardless of their background.  All schools within the Trust are committed to this moral purpose and are supported to secure the very best educational outcomes. Collaboration lies at the heart of Teaching and Learning within the Trust.  There are opportunities for shared professional development, planning, research and moderation which strengthens Teaching and Learning in individual schools. An MLT Teacher magazine is produced 4 times a year which showcases best practice within Trust schools, and an evidence-informed Trust Teaching and Learning Handbook is used across the schools to support excellent and up-to-date classroom practice. A Talent Management Framework is also in place to support staff development which includes residency opportunities within and across Trust schools.
