Job overview

We are looking for an ambitious teacher of English who will also contribute effectively to the leadership and management of the Department. This is an opportunity to join a popular and highly successful semi-rural school, proud to uphold traditional standards of respect and behaviour.

Staindrop School an Academy is both popular and successful with students enjoying a broad and rich curriculum from the ages of 11 to 16. Students on intake are broadly at national average levels but the progress they make during their 5 years with us is significantly better than that normally expected. In 2013 progress made by students placed the school 100th (out of 3017 nationally). The school values every child and so achieves tremendous results for the whole ability range including pupils who are More Able and Talented and those with Special Educational Needs. That this is achieved is a result of first class teaching in a calm and work-like atmosphere fostered by a culture of mutual respect founded on traditional standards of behaviour and courtesy.

The English Department currently consists of an experienced and successful Head of Department, two additional full-time colleagues (one is also Literacy Co-ordinator) with three part timers.

The school achieves fine academic standards but it is about so much more than that and the motto "Maximising Success in a Strong Community" encapsulates this.

Staindrop School is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We want to develop a more diverse workforce and we positively welcome applicants from all sections of the community.

Applicants with disabilities will be invited for interview if the essential job criteria are met.

Any offer of employment will be subject to receipt of a satisfactory Enhanced DBS.

Values and vision

Staindrop Academy’s main focus is quality first teaching where differentiation in lessons allows the individual needs of all students to be met. Where a student’s individual needs require further support, the school prides itself on being able provide an individualised timetable as well as withdrawal work in small groups.

Above all, the school places great importance on academic excellence. It therefore continually monitors teaching methods and the progress of individual pupils. The school motto is "maximising success in a strong community".

Ofsted

“Governors and other leaders have sought out good support from other schools and professionals. Their guidance is helping the academy improve more quickly. Students’ behaviour around the academy is highly creditable. Students say there is little or no bullying and they feel safe. Generally, students are very well looked after and cared for. They are given high quality support when joining this academy, and high quality guidance when about to move on to the next stages in their education.”

Local Area

Nestled amongst rolling hills, Staindrop has been described as one of the prettiest villages in County Durham, its stands as one of the gateways into Teesdale, with its long village greens making it a typical rural Durham village.

Staindrop is a historic village in Teesdale which lies in the south west of County Durham. The village is a thriving and vibrant community with lots of local organisations, post office, general store, butchers, tea rooms, fish and chip shop and two hair salons, a public house and two schools. Staindrop Cof E Primary School has an Outstanding Ofsted grade, taking students into the nursery from the age of 3. The houses are mainly made of stone and clustered around the village greens. The magnificent local church, St Mary’s, dates back to the late Anglo Saxon period and stands proudly at the gateway to Staindrop. Close by is Raby Castle with its deer park as well as the ancient market town of Barnard Castle with its weekly market. High Force, one of the highest waterfalls in England, is just a short ride away.

There are a variety of walks using public rights of way around the village into the stunning countryside that surrounds Staindrop.

Staindrop sits within the greater area of south-west Durham called Teesdale, a strikingly beautiful and still relatively undiscovered part of the north east which is home to rare flora and fauna. Teesdale is the gateway to the Pennines and the Lake District.
