Job overview

Assistant Headteacher, Newham

One of the 100 Most Improved Schools in the Country (DfE, January 2014)

  • Are you highly ambitious for the pupils in your school?
  • Do you want to work in a school where we ask every day 'what is the best way to do this?'
  • Are you committed to constantly learning more about how to be a better teacher and manager?
  • Is your own teaching at least consistently good, and do you have the skills and knowledge to help others develop their teaching?
  • Do you believe that non-selective schools can provide as high quality an education as any other school in the country?
  • Are you resilient, imaginative, thoughtful, conscientious and determined?
  • Do you treat staff and students the way that you expect to be treated yourself?

Lister Community School is a large 11-16 comprehensive school at the heart of its community in Plaistow, and part of a soft federation with our 7 nearest primary schools. Student attainment is rising rapidly: our head-line 5ACEM figure has risen from 38% in 2010 to 55% in 2013. Our November 2013 Ofsted report raised the school's grading to Good in all areas and spoke of the school's 'consistent focus on raising the quality of teaching and developing a culture of learning and high aspirations across the school'. It also noted that 'best practice in teaching is shared amongst staff who are reflective and readily engage in constructive feedback and training focused around teaching.' We are determined to become an Outstanding school in the next two years.

We aim to provide as good a quality of education as at any school in the country, and to measure ourselves against the best. Our staff regularly visit other schools as part of our Outstanding Practice Programme and this has developed the school's 'outward looking' ethos. The school benefits from a range of external partnerships including Teach First, the Brilliant Club, the Valentines' Teaching Alliance and becoming the first partner school in the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Music Foundation and the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust. This is an exciting place to work: staff are enthusiastic and talented and our students are friendly, courteous, motivated and have high aspirations. Our recent Ofsted noted that the Headteacher (in post since September 2011) has been 'focused and determined in his approach toward school improvement' and 'established a senior leadership team that is sharing the vision of improving achievement well'.

The Role

Lister has been through rapid change in the last three years, led by a committed and cohesive Senior Leadership Team. There are many significant challenges ahead, both in embedding good practice around recent changes, and also in establishing the new points of good practice which will enable us to progress further.

You will be joining a Leadership Team which is committed to working in a collaborative and mutually supportive way. This role will suit someone who is confident in themselves as a teacher and manager, and keen to develop as a school leader. The precise areas of responsibility will be agreed following appointment, as the only specialist role among the AHTs is the AHT/SENCO role. Other AHTs are likely to be involved in line-managing a House and Faculty. CPD is a priority, and you will have the opportunity to work with and learn from exceptional practitioners, both in Lister and elsewhere.

Please read the attached Mission Statement and Ethos document, and if you share our values and think that this sounds like a role that you can fill, contact Beryl King (Office Manager) for an application pack. Potential candidates are strongly encouraged to visit the school, and to meet students, members of the Leadership Team and other staff. Visits have been scheduled for the following dates: Tuesday 22nd April 2014 between 2.00 - 3.30 pm, Friday 25th April 2014 between 8.15 - 9.45 am

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment, health and enhanced CRB checks. Further details and an application form can be downloaded directly from the Lister Website: http://www.lister.newham.sch.uk/vacancies-2 home-page/vacancies or by contacting Beryl King (Office Manager) on 020 8471 3311. All replies to be returned to the school at the above address or by email to: jobs@lister.newham.sch.uk

Closing date and time: 12.00 noon, Wednesday 30th April 2014
Provisional interview dates: Thursday 8th May and Friday 9th May, 2014

About Lister Community School

Lister Community School is situated in Plaistow, East London, approximately 10 mins walk from Plaistow and Upton Park Underground stations.  We are also in close proximity to the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield (Stratford) shopping centre. Please note we have no parking available onsite.

We are a specialist school in Music and Science.  We are a mixed comprehensive secondary school and welcome both students and staff from a diverse multicultural background.  With over 1,600 students, we are a larger than average school in the London Borough of Newham.  The school benefits from being located in new and purpose built accommodation on a single site with ample outdoor areas and the use of an all-weather sports pitch.

The school is led by a team of senior leaders who are enthusiastic and experienced and, alongside all staff, share a positive and united vision for the school’s future.  With an improved curriculum, vertical tutoring and house systems, Lister provides a well rounded and balanced experience for students.

Resource Provision for Deaf Children: Lister Community School hosts the Resourced Provision for secondary aged Deaf children in Newham. Specialist staff support students using a variety of communication modes such as BSL, SSE and Auditory Oral. Deaf students are taught alongside their hearing peers in mainstream classes for the majority of their lessons. The Deaf Support Department is made up of a large team of Communication Support Workers and Qualified Teachers of the Deaf who work with the deaf students in mainstream classes as well as small groups and 1:1. Deaf students may also have access to Deaf Awareness sessions and pre and post teaching.

Newham Community Learning:  Our school is part of Newham Community Learning, which exists in order to provide an excellent education for all young people in our community.  We are the only Trust to offer all-through provision from ages 2 - 16 within a single family of schools in Newham. Across our two primary and four secondary schools, all located in the west of the borough, we educate over 5,400 local children and young people, and employ a team of  close to 700 members of staff, the vast majority of whom live locally.

To view opportunities at all our schools, please see our Trust page on TES.

Train with us - we are delighted to partner with Teach First to deliver our School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme.  Teach First is a national charity that develops and supports teachers and leaders who are determined to make a difference where it is needed the most. As a training partner, we will be working with Teach First to deliver this one year teacher training programme, which enables participants to train and develop skills in the classroom.  It is ideal for people who are eager to learn on the job and make a difference in their community from day one.  Our Newham Community Learning SCITT Booklet has further information; please email traintoteach@ncltrust.net to find out more.
