Ofsted is at the core of the Government's approach to school and children's services reform. Ofsted carries out hundreds of inspections and regulatory visits each week and publishes its findings to shine a light on performance and drives improvement in schools, colleges and children's services.

To lead this work, the Secretary of State for Education seeks to appoint a Chair to the non-executive Board of the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted). The successful candidate will have a proven track record of successful leadership and governance within a major organisation, with a deep commitment to improving standards in education, children's services and skills.

Ofsted is a Non-Ministerial Department which regulates and inspects to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages.

The appointment of the Chair of Ofsted is governed by the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice.

This is a non-executive appointment to public office for three years, subject to performance. The Chair is not an employee of Ofsted.

The Chair of Ofsted will be expected to devote two/three days a week to his/her office and is paid an honorarium of up to £70,000 per annum. The appointment is available from 1st September 2014.
