Job overview

Chemistry Teacher, Newcastle upon Tyne

The Governors wish to appoint an excellent Chemistry teacher to join our successful and expanding Science department. The role may appeal to candidates seeking their first teaching post or, equally, to recently qualified or more experienced teachers, looking to develop in an outstanding school which has a very strong commitment to Science. Science is very popular at each key stage. Uptake is very strong in Sixth Form and is set to expand further as large and very able cohorts reach the end of KS4.

We provide excellent CPD for NQTs and recently qualified teachers, as well as on-going training for more experienced teachers. There are opportunities for teachers at all levels to help develop teaching and learning across the school, working collaboratively with teachers from other departments, whether as coaches, researchers or SLEs. The working environment is, therefore, a very stimulating one for all staff and is an added attraction of this post.

St Mary's is a very successful, popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a brand new building which opened in 2011. We are also a National Support School, increasingly engaged in school to school support, as well being one of 3 core partners in the Northern Lights Teaching School Alliance.

Science is a well-established and successful department with very good results. 2013 highlights include:-

  • At GCSE level 52% of students achieved A* and A grades in Chemistry, 55% in Biology and 62% in Physics.
  • 83% of students achieved A* - C grades in the Dual Award and a 100% pass rate at Level 2
  • At A Level over 67% of students achieved A* - C grades in Chemistry, 67% in Physics and 71% in Biology.
  • 100% of students achieved merit and above at Level 3
  • Key Stage 3 results are very strong too, with very able cohorts coming through.

At whole school level, St Mary's has made outstanding progress over recent years:-

  • 3 Outstanding inspections.
  • Top 100 most improved schools nationally, 2005-8, 2006-9 and 2009-12.
  • Top quintile ranking for 11 out of 12 performance measures in Ofsted's data dashboard.
  • 73% 5+ A*-C with English and Maths in 2013, with exceptional pupil progress measures.
  • Growing post-16 sector with strong attainment and progress.
  • Outstanding new building opened 2011.
  • Oversubscribed with a rising roll (850 in 2009 - c.1200 in September 2014).

The Governors wish to appoint a teacher with:-

  • A strong commitment to understanding and promoting the school's Catholic/Christian ethos.
  • A passion for providing the best possible holistic education for all students.
  • A commitment to maximising achievement through excellence in teaching and learning.
  • A passion for contributing to the development of our Science department at a very exciting time.
