About Swallowdale Primary Academy and Community Centre

The school is a large semi open-plan Primary on the B6047 to the south of the market town of Melton Mowbray, Leics.  It was built in two phases in 1973 and 1974.  There are currently 337 pupils on roll, of which  are 189 Juniors and 148 are Infants.  Swallowdale is one of the larger primary schools in the County.

At present there are 12 full-time class teachers, 1 part-time SENco Teacher, 2 Assistant Headteacher plus the Headteacher.

Children are admitted at the age of four according to the new LEA admission arrangements.  They transfer to a Leicestershire 11-16 high school at the end of the year in which they become 11.  Education in Leicestershire schools is fully comprehensive.

The school is organised in three departments – EYFS, KS1 and KS2 – and these share two halls, a large well-resourced library, a computer suite and a number of ‘quiet rooms’.  There are four playground areas and extensive grounds.  Most teaching areas are semi open-plan and it may be advantageous, (although not essential) for candidates to have some experience of this form of organisation.

There are at present 6 Infant classes and 6 Junior classes.  Staff are in departmental teams and also in year-group teams.  Classes are single-age wherever possible, however 4 classes are vertically grouped in KS2.The school values all children as individuals and aims to enable each child to develop to the fullest possible extent – socially, emotionally and morally as well as academically and physically.  A wide range of approaches and teaching methods are utilised and staff are encouraged to bring their own styles and expertise to their work but, as in all semi open-plan schools, a high degree of co-operation and co-ordination is also required.  We have been particularly innovative with our curriculum. We have been working on a creative, cross curricular delivery and continue to work upon the development of a skills based approach. The school enjoys a particularly good reputation for its work in the spheres of ICT, Sport, Assessment and EYFS provision. We support other schools in the LA in their development of APP.

We have just received a letter from HMI postponing our awaited Ofsted Inspection until Summer 2012 at the earliest.  The school has been categorised by the Local Authority as ‘Outstanding’.

The school has very good relationships with parents and many help in school on a regular basis and in a variety of ways.

We enjoyed a successful previous Ofsted Inspection in 2007 and are aiming for ‘Outstanding’ at our next inspection.
