Downland is a Special School that caters for boys (year 7-11) with a range of Special Educational Needs including Social, Emotional, Behavioural Difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and other barriers to learning such as Specific and Moderate Learning Difficulties. Assessed by Ofsted in July 2012 as Good, the school meets the needs of society's most complex, vulnerable and disaffected students. Engagement in the context of the school is excellent and students contribute exceptionally well to the life and work of the school.

Downland endeavours to be a place of discovery, a place where students can receive the support and specialist teaching required, enabling them to re-engage in learning. Our Staff understand the wide range of different circumstances and particular difficulties our boys have experienced prior to coming to our school.

We now wish to appoint a dynamic, ambitious, and well-qualified teacher of English who has a proven record in raising achievement.

You will have a passion for your subject, a track record of outstanding teaching and the ability to engage all learners despite their individual needs.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our enthusiastic, committed and professional team.

Can you raise aspiration and rise to the challenge?

Key areas of work will include:
Continuing to drive the strategic development plan including:

  • Leading and inspiring the quality of teaching and learning within English,
  • Developing our English curriculum,
  • Raising levels of progress and attainment for all,
  • Focusing on meeting the needs of the whole child,
  • Teaching mixed ability class groups of pupils with complex needs (class sizes max 8).

The ability to lead the development of numeracy teaching and learning throughout the school is essential. You will develop our numeracy strategies across the curriculum and lead initiatives to secure outstanding teaching and learning through both key stages. Enthusiasm and commitment to working with and raising achievement for pupils with SEND is paramount to us.

Visits to the school are welcomed and encouraged. To find out more about this exciting opportunity or request an application pack please email admin@downland.wilts.sch.uk

Closing date: Thursday 24th April by Midday
