About Guilsfield CP School

GUILSFIELD COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Guilsfield is a thriving village to the north of Welshpool. The school is situated in the middle of the village, within walking distance of many of the houses. We have a large campus thoughtfully designed and with a spacious sports field and well equipped playground where children are encouraged to take part in numerous activities.

The main building caters for children in Key Stage 2 and apart from classrooms, houses administration, the main hall, library, a craft/art area, and a computer area.

The infant block caters for children in Key Stage 1 and comprises of two classrooms. A central area between the classrooms is used for art and craft and also houses a library area.

We are also fortunate to have a Care Standards in Wales registered Pre-School group that meets daily.

We have excellent Reception/Nursery facilities in a building adjacent to the Infant Block. Children are made to feel at home here and are able to play within their own environment. They have the facilities to have their lunch within this area.

This early years building is equipped with a disabled ramp. The school and Community Centre are equipped with disabled facilities. The school is at present included in an adaptation programme, working with the local authority, to provide at the first possible opportunity disabled access to all the school buildings along with additional disabled facilities to meet with requirements. Children with disabilities will be given every opportunity to participate in a full and meaningful life at the school.

School lunches are cooked and served on the premises and Mrs Helen Bowen is the cook in charge. We also have a Breakfast Club that provides breakfast for children each morning from 8.15 am.

The school is lucky in having very attractive grounds, which apart from affording good sporting facilities also provides a comfortable and safe environment for the children. The children have been encouraged to take a pride in the grounds and Mrs Southam runs a Gardening Club. The Dyfed/Powys Police Force hold a Road Safety, Don’t Drink and Drive Competition and we are proud to have pupils winning the slogan section and the poster section and this year we were also winners in the All Wales section. We are pleased to encourage children to compete in extra-curricular competitions at all levels.

Mrs Southam recently won the Teacher of the Year Award for all Wales School and Community and also Teacher of the Year for Science. Mrs Bonsall, our Nursery assistant has just been awarded teaching Assistant of the Year Award for the whole of Wales and Mrs Birch has been awarded the Sports Personality of the Year by the County Times. Miss Gethin is also finalist for the Newly Qualified Teacher of the Year.

Safety is of paramount importance and at break times we have very reliable staff to oversee the pupils. The school has a security alarm system in place.
