Wiveliscombe Primary School is a good school, known for its holistic approach and well-supported by the local community.  A Reception-to-Year-6 primary school, it provides an environment where pupils and adults work together with enthusiasm on a broad range of learning activities.

Our pupils live in and around the town of Wiveliscombe and come from a range of social and cultural backgrounds. 9.5% of pupils attract the pupil premium but we work hard to meet their needs. We are also proud to support children with special needs, whether with learning difficulties or particular strengths. The school has a small but growing number of children from minority ethnic groups; two or three different first languages are spoken, reflecting a small population of Polish and other migrant workers in the town, which brings an element of diversity to the school.

Good behaviour is a particular feature of our school and this stems from the confidence and friendly manner that the children are encouraged to have in their dealings with each other and with adults.  The children readily play and socialise across the year groups both in and out of school, adding to the strong sense of community that exists in the school and town.

The school has 239 pupils organised into 8 classes, including some split years.  Our number on roll is growing steadily, and is likely to increase further as new houses are built in the town.

Ofsted
In February 2013 we were described by Ofsted as “good” in all aspects, and we are looking to use the time before our next inspection to further build our academic strength while keeping the character of the school arising from the wide range of enrichment opportunities we provide for our pupils.

Learning Together
While the Early Years Foundation Stage is a particular strength of the school and the National Curriculum is delivered to all KS1/2 pupils, we believe in a holistic approach and also provide a broad range of experiences with strong emphasis on the arts.

We support our pupils to develop into confident and motivated learners.  In a warm and friendly atmosphere we equip them with skills and opportunities to start out on their own individual path in life.

Trips and residential visits supplement the curriculum, and we offer varied extra-curricular activities ranging from a breakfast club through to choir, film club, numerous sports (we were county cricket and cyclocross champions in 2013), forest school and other outdoor activities.

We have good links with Wiveliscombe Children’s Centre, Kingsmead Academy (the town’s secondary school), nearby primary schools, and other partnership organisations.  In the new world of collaboration and academies, we are keen to investigate and establish how we can build even stronger links whilst maintaining our own unique identity.

The School
Our school is based in an original Victorian building providing a range of classrooms and the usual offices, supplemented by a new Hall and EYFS block providing two teaching rooms, and two temporary classrooms.  A large playing field provides for a popular outdoor classroom, permanent play equipment and a conservation area. In the summer months we make use of the town’s community swimming pool.

The Community
Staff are dedicated and want the best for individual pupils and the school overall.  We have built the team of teaching and non-teaching staff with a wide range of experience and skills, and we put pupils at the heart of everything we do.

Governors are equally committed to the school and currently bring a wide range of skills and experience from business, law, public administration, the arts and beyond.

An active PTFA supports school activities with a wide range of fundraising events throughout the year.

We have strong relationships with the local community not least because many of our pupils’ parents and grandparents attended the school.  Pupils participate in local events and make extensive use of town facilities.  The school hall is used in the evenings and at weekends by a wide range of local groups.
