Job overview

Curriculum Leader in MFL, Blackpool

Ref: 1314/054

Blackpool Sixth is the perfect place to build your career - and enjoy a great quality of life.

Our students are exceptional too. They're achieving a 98% pass rate with nearly 60% of entries resulting in top grades, more than 80% progress to HE and seven students secured places at Oxbridge for this year.

We are proud that we have been rated Outstanding by Ofsted. That's largely down to the dedication of our high-performing teaching team. Focused on the particular needs of 16 to 19 year old students through a range of courses (mainly AS/A Levels and BTECs), their goal is to educate the whole person within a close and caring community.

As the first sixth form college to be awarded Teaching School status, we also play a vital role in Initial Teacher Training and offer top class CPD and leadership development for all of our staff. Add to that a brand new £25 million development, state-of-the-art facilities (including a recently refurbished sports hall and fitness suite).

As an inspirational leader, we are looking for you to take Modern Foreign Languages to the next stage and develop them as a subject of choice. With a good degree in a relevant discipline and a recognised teaching qualification and sound experience in leading curriculum improvement initiatives you'll also have a proven track record of successful teaching. The ability to teach German and have knowledge of the WJEC AS/A2 Level specification for German would be an advantage although this is not essential.

You'll be joining the talented team in the English & Modern Foreign Languages Department, which is currently Grade 2 (Good and Improving). It's growing too, particularly in relation to our overseas students, as we have over 30 overseas students every year who add a richness to the curriculum. We would also be keen for you to be involved in our wide programme of enrichment activities, ranging from debating societies and creative writing groups to visiting writers and trips for students both at home and abroad.

So what about your ambitions? We'll make sure you enjoy all the professional development you need to achieve them and you will get great support from our team. We will value your innovative thinking and fresh ideas as you lead the delivery of teaching, learning and assessment across all subject areas. You can also look forward to a unique opportunity to shape the future of this progressive curriculum area.

In return, we offer excellent Terms and Conditions including 195 working days per year (plus 5 additional days for CLs) and access to the Teachers' Pension Scheme.

Blackpool Sixth is committed to equality of opportunity for all. To find out more and apply, please visit www.blackpoolsixth.ac.uk/vacancies or email personnel@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk.

Closing Date: 1st May 2014, 12pm

We are a high-achieving sixth form, giving our students an excellent springboard to success. We educate the whole student, providing all with excellent teaching and opportunities for growth and personal development. We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding sixth form. We are relatively small in size, with just over 2000 students and approximately 200 staff. This means that we are a close and caring community.

We serve the whole Fylde Coast area, which includes Poulton-le-Fylde and Lytham St Annes, as well as Blackpool and the surrounding towns and villages. Blackpool Sixth is a friendly, positive and supportive place to work and is rated Grade One: Outstanding by Ofsted (2009). In 2009, we became one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Investors in People Gold Award. Staff are committed to the needs and aspirations of our students and supported by an extensive programme of staff development.

Staff are highly committed to the needs and aspirations of our students. The continued growth in student numbers and planned curriculum developments has enabled the sixth form to invest in new staff and new buildings. The college is designated as a Teaching School in partnership with Hodgson Academy and it's a really exciting time to be part of Blackpool Sixth.

All new staff are offered a thorough induction program; this is supplemented for Newly Qualified Teachers with a comprehensive series of training sessions throughout the academic year. All new staff are allocated a mentor in their probationary year, they are here to offer support and guidance in your new role. It's not just teachers that we develop, both teaching and support staff are involved in an annual programme of staff development, supported by individual performance management reviews and training and development plans.

On top of the internal opportunities staff now also benefit from a wider programme of Continuing Professional Development events which come from being part of the Teaching School Alliance, these include nationally accredited programmes.
