About St Michael's Church of England Primary School

We have a one hundred and forty year history and we are looking for a special person to build on the past successes and lead us forward to becoming an outstanding school in every aspect.

The school is split over two sites with the infants and reception classes in one area and the junior school, administration offices and hall across the road in the island created by Champion Crescent/Road. We are extremely fortunate to share our site with the parish church and we have almost unlimited access to both the church building and the church hall to extend our accommodation when required. The church was bombed during the second world war and rebuilt in the 1950s and our school hall is actually built on some of the foundations from the original church.

Space in the school has been at a premium but the transition from one and a half form entry to one form entry is already improving the learning environment. The school now has more space for intervention groups and our children are benefitting from the extra space they now have in the playground. Reception through to Year 3 are now single form and the transition will be completed in 2014/15.

St Michael’s is innovative and ready to try new ideas. In recent years we have:

• Stepped outside the local authority school meals contract and tendered independently with a small number of schools from our ‘collaborative’.

• Introduced and adopted the International Primary Curriculum

• Been a ‘change partner’ with Creative Partnerships

We have some exciting ideas to further improve the school site for the benefit of learners, staff and parents/visitors but there is nothing concrete yet. This means that you will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of developing, planning and implementing these developments in conjunction with the governors, our architect, staff and parents. You will be able to add your own special contribution to the history of this one-time village school.
