David Lewis School & College

A living and learning environment which promotes that all-important transition from childhood to adult life for young people with epilepsy, related neurological conditions and learning difficulties.

Our Mission is to enable young people with complex epilepsy, related neurological conditions and learning difficulties to make the optimum transition to adult living in the wider community by recognising potential, developing skills, building confidence, raising self-esteem and maximising individual capacity for independence.

David Lewis is a renowned provider of high quality services for people with epilepsy and related neurological conditions including learning disabilities and behavioural difficulties. It makes a major contribution at regional and national level and continually strives for excellence.

Situated in 140 acres of beautiful countryside near Alderley Edge in Cheshire, the site has a spacious village atmosphere with buildings and houses situated around an oval drive. On site are a school, college, day services unit/ continuing adult education, residential houses, impressive sports facilities ... and plenty of space.

We offer residential and day places and provide education and training for around 70 young people aged 14-25 years, who have complex epilepsy and related neurological conditions. Our learners also have learning difficulties and a significant number have behavioural and communication difficulties, some with autistic spectrum disorders.

We have a clear vision of how to help our young people on their way to independence – via personal development, education, care, medical support in helping to stabilise their epilepsy, and therapies. The collaboration between each of these teams greatly benefits the progress of every student. Learning takes place within an holistic curriculum which identifies and includes learning opportunities within the School & College, on the residential units, out in the community and, where appropriate, on work experience placements.

To support our young people in their learning, we offer three pathways, which reflect the different abilities and needs of the learners:

An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is the basis of a learner’s journey. This sets out the primary learning goal, which is the overall aim of the College Educational placement. The learner works with the teacher and key worker to agree goals for key areas including communication, Skills for Life (literacy, numeracy, ICT), personal development and independence training. Other subjects on offer are sports, Performing and Creative Arts, Horticulture, Health and PHSE, Community Access and Citizenship, as well as work experience and vocational qualifications.

All our young people come to College to make progress and they all achieve – in different ways and to different levels.
