Based in Barnstaple and dividing time between Child Employment and the North Devon Youth Offending Team.

An opportunity has arisen within Babcock LDP to appoint an Education Welfare Officer to our highly regarded team based in Devon. This post will be based in Barnstaple and the successful candidate will be required to take a lead role regarding child employment and licencing children in entertainment in addition to supporting the work of the North Devon Youth Offending Team.

For approximately 1.5 days per week this post will be within the North and West Devon Youth Offending Team. The post holder will be expected to work with young people who have offended or who are in danger of offending, both by working with them directly (by managing a caseload of young people who are of school age) and by acting as a source of advice and assistance on educational issues to the other members of the team. The post holder will also be responsible for monitoring the education of all young people working with the YOT. The successful post holder will also need to be able to rapidly form positive relationships with young people who have offended and their families and also to build strong working relationships with fellow professionals, both within the YOT team and across other agencies, especially schools and other education providers.

The child employment element of the post will include a number of tasks for example talking to potential chaperones about expectations, engaging with employers if issues arise, and maintaining records in the child employment database.

We expect the successful candidates to have:

  • A total commitment towards safeguarding children and young people
  • Good listening skills
  • The ability to deal with confidential information and sensitive issues
  • A calm and confident approach in difficult situations
  • The ability to work well with pupils, parents, teachers and other professionals
  • An understanding of the law about education and keeping children safe
  • Accurate record-keeping and good organisational skills
  • Experience in IT with ability to analyse data and write detailed reports
  • Teamwork and networking skills to work with a range of other agencies
  • Clear communication skills

We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate empathy and resilience, and who are able to communicate effectively at all levels. Previous experience of working as an EWO is not essential as full training will be provided.
