Ghyll Royd School was established in 1889 and was originally situated on Grove Road in Ilkley. In 2000 it moved to Greystone Manor on the roundabout at Burley in Wharfedale on the A65.

Ghyll Royd was established as a boys’ school but in September 2009 the decision was taken to open its doors to girls; officially from January 2010. Ghyll Royd had developed a reputation for providing an excellent standard of education for boys and it was felt the time was right to be able to offer the same opportunities to girls.

Ghyll Royd currently has 106 pupils including 30 children in the preschool and 25 full and part time staff in the school. We pride ourselves on meeting all our pupil’s individual needs and we are driven to make sure our children are happy and want to come to school. We all work extremely hard to ensure that they have high self esteem and enjoy success. We want our pupils to be stimulated and excited about learning, to demonstrate confidence and independence and to feel proud being a pupil at Ghyll Royd; standards are extremely high.

Class sizes differ and we have classes as small as five with our largest class having seventeen pupils. All classes have a dedicated class teacher and we have additional part time specialist staff. We also have support staff who work with staff and children of all ages. Staff work extremely hard and are expected to contribute to all aspects of the school including extra curricular clubs, playground duties, serving lunch, attending school functions and events out of school hours and at weekends (performances, Open Days, sports events etc). We have a strong and friendly team who are extremely supportive of one another and who consider it a privilege to work at the school.

We have tremendous facilities and grounds at Ghyll Royd. Nursery, KS1 and Form 3 have their classrooms in the main building along with our IT suite and art/science room. Forms 4 – 6 have their classrooms in the recently renovated Coach House behind the main school building which also houses our music room. Behind that we have our Multi Purpose Hall, a fantastic sports and performance facility with changing rooms and lockers. We have our own sports fields and plenty of ground yet to develop.

We have an active PTA and Board of Governors and many parents volunteer their time to help in school. As a fee paying school our parents can expect the highest standards in all areas and staff need to be able to deal with articulate, professional and interested parents.

We have a wonderful Pre School which occupies two rooms and has its own extensive and state of the art outdoor play area. Children between the ages of two and four can join us at any point in the year and are expected initially to do a minimum of three sessions, progressively increasing until they do a minimum of seven sessions per week in the term before they move in to Reception. We have a play based approach incorporating some structured numeracy and literacy sessions and specialist lessons in music and PE. Staff are expected to get absorbed in the children’s play and to be able to extend and develop their ideas and interests.

We opened a 50 week Day Nursery, ‘Babes in the Wood’ in January 2010 and have 42 children registered with us with a maximum of 18 on any one day. We provide quality care for young boys and girls aged three months to two years and many of the children move through into our Preschool. We are currently looking to move the Nursery into its own facilities to enable Reception to access their own outdoor play space.
