Job overview

The Independent Schools Council (ISC) brings eight independent school
associations together and represents over 1,200 schools educating
80% of all independent school pupils in the UK. These schools are
ranked among the best in the world and educate more than 500,000
children. The ISC conducts and provides research, legal, regulatory
and press and communications services to its member schools.

The Board of the ISC, which comprises representatives of the eight member associations, now seeks to appoint a General Secretary. The General Secretary is the executive responsible for running the ISC, executing its strategy and delivering its operational priorities.

The General Secretary reports to the Chairman of the ISC and to the Board.

The ISC's strategy is:

  • To support the aims and objectives of ISC member associations and provide a forum where
    members from different associations may meet
  • To be a leading source of legal and regulatory advice and guidance for the sector, campaigning,
    where necessary, to protect and preserve the independence of the sector
  • To conduct and compile authoritative sector research and intelligence to underpin its strategic
    objectives and operational priorities
  • To provide online access to sector and school information to inform parental decisions

The Board seeks an individual with a clear understanding of, and a commitment to, the role of the ISC and who possesses the presence and ability to represent the interests of the independent educator sector. The successful candidate will ideally have direct experience of the independent education sector, of its governance and leadership and will have a sound understanding of the compliance and accountability framework in the sector. He/she will have an interest in and understanding of education and a commitment to the role of a strong independent sector as part of the UK's educational provision.

The successful candidate will be a strong networker capable of identifying, developing and sustaining effective relationships with stakeholders in the independent school sector. He/she will be a diplomat, possessing a warm, approachable and confident manner and have the ability to foster consensus building amongst its member associations and schools.
