Magnus Academy is a rapidly improving school, recently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted and on a journey to 'Outstanding'.  Magnus is a mixed, non-selective, Church of England secondary school with sixth form situated in the beautiful riverside town of Newark, Nottinghamshire. There are approximately 680 students at the school, between the ages of 11-18.

Formerly Magnus C of E School, the amalgamation of the Magdalene High School and The Thomas Magnus School, Manus C of E Academy converted to academy status in 2014. Founded as a grammar school in 1531 by British diplomat Thomas Magnus, the school’s original building is now a museum. The school is a member of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham Multi Academy Trust.

Above all else, Magnus is a family and we welcome all new staff and students alike.

Values and vision

Magnus C of E Academy is an inclusive school where each student is valued and supported, allowing for them reach their full potential. It wishes for pupils to develop in self-confidence and believe in success. The academy has five core values: determination, integrity, ambition, humility and compassion. Leadership plays a key role at Magnus C of E Academy, and students are encouraged to develop these skills with an active Student Council. The secondary school wants all pupils to have an aspiration and runs a careers programme to raise awareness of future opportunities both inside and outside of Newark.

Ofsted

“Every effort is made by leaders and by teachers to raise expectations for pupils in order that they succeed. It is no longer acceptable for them to misbehave, not attend school or not wear their uniform with pride. Every indication is that pupils are responding positively to these expectations and are making improving progress in their learning as a result”.
