ABOUT THE POST
We are seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic teacher of mathematics to lead and take forward this popular and successful subject area.  Maths is the largest subject in college and offers maths, further maths and use of maths at level 3 and maths and FSMQ at level 2.  There are currently 15 sets, 7 at A2 and 8 at AS together with 4 sets at level 2.  These are taught by three full time and two part time members of staff.

ABOUT BARROW-IN-FURNESS SIXTH FORM COLLEGE
Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College is the only sixth form college in Cumbria.  Its location at the end of the Furness peninsula means that the College serves a limited population including some deprived urban areas and a large area of rural south Cumbria.  Our student population closely matches that of our locality by most indicators and is significantly different from the profile for sixth form Colleges nationally.  This is particularly the case at level 2 and for adult students.
Students are mostly recruited from four 11-16 partner schools in Barrow-in-Furness but also from two rural 11-16 schools at Coniston and Cartmel and from 11-18 schools at Ulverston and Millom.  A small number of students are from the independent sector and from further afield in the South Lakes and Copeland areas.
Full time 16-18 A level teaching constitutes the core business of the College.  However, the College also teaches 16-18 students on GCSE, Cambridge Technical and other courses and also some adults, mainly on care courses.
Partnership in Furness is strong and the College belongs to the Furness Education Consortium.  We have a very strong relationship with Furness College and are co-lead sponsors with Furness College and the University of Cumbria, of an 11-16 academy.

Salary: Salary scale C - a higher salary may be available to a suitably qualified applicant with the skills and experience to take on leadership responsibilities in developing learning in other subjects.

About Barrow-In-Furness Sixth Form College

Barrow Sixth Form College is one of the few purpose-built sixth form colleges and the only sixth form college in Cumbria. It occupies a single site in an attractive rural setting to the north of the town.

The buildings have been specially designed for students over the age of sixteen and have facilities for students with physical and other disabilities.

Students are recruited from six 11 to 16 partner schools in Barrow-in-Furness, two rural 11 to 16 schools at Coniston and Cartmel and from 11 to 18 schools. A significant number of students are from the independent sector and from further afield in the South Lakes area.

Although the college's main work is to provide full-time courses for students aged 16 to 18, an increasing number of adult learners are also recruited. The college offers 35 general certificate of education (GCE) subjects and one OCR Level 3 National Certificate. Approximately 80% of the students aged 16 to 18 are enrolled on to advanced level courses. At Level 2 students can select from one of 4 OCR National courses which they can study alongside GCSEs.

The College is an active member of the Furness 14-19 Education Consortium and in that capacity is very involved in the preparations to deliver and offer the new Diplomas In Society, Health and Development and Creative and Media. The College also teaches some courses for 14-16 year olds in partnership with local schools.

In 2003, a £1 million building programme enhanced the accommodation by providing improved social and dining facilities, a large IT suite and additional classroom space.
