Job overview

Head of Pre-Degree, Plymouth

Post Ref: HPD-01

Plymouth College of Art is an independent specialist Art College active since 1856. We are a distinctive, innovative and supportive learning community working in contemporary art, design and media.

The College offers a strong portfolio of further and higher education programmes which include Masters, Foundation and BA (Hons) level degrees, short and bespoke courses and services for creative business and creative apprenticeships.

We are seeking to appoint a creative and dynamic Head of Pre-Degree who will head up the FE provision at the College, with responsibilities for the development of our FE curriculum, which delivers A levels, Extended Diplomas in both Art & Design and Media specifications, Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and Functional Skills and GCSE in Maths and English.

You will take a leading role in the planning, delivery, review and development of FE courses; implementing innovations that support continuous improvements in learning and teaching; overseeing resource and budget management, Internal Verification, Teaching Observations, Industry liaison and marketing. In the direct line management of a team of specialist staff you will provide leadership that will continue to consolidate and enhance the provision of FE study at Plymouth College of Art.

You will:

  • Have a professional track record in FE delivery and an excellent awareness of Further Education and its current key trends and drivers.
  • Be proactive, inspirational and highly motivated with experience of managing, teaching and successfully planning, co-ordinating and delivering FE curriculum areas.

We're redefining what you can expect from a modern art college. Passionate about all forms of art and design - from traditional crafts to digital media - we're a place to invent, experiment, and try things you've never tried before.

Forget the usual boundaries, they don't apply here. We value independence - as an institution and in our people. Unlike with some art colleges, you won't notice a 'signature style' from our students. Work for us and you'll be constantly encouraged to develop your own unique talent.

We're a small, welcoming community. Innovative, creative and defiantly passionate about art. Our networks reach way beyond the campus and so will yours. We link education and industry, arts and the community, so you can form the connections that will support a life-long career.

About Plymouth College of Art

As an independent, specialist art college we welcome people who want to be part of our free-thinking and dynamic community.

We recruit the best people to a variety of roles within a stimulating, friendly and diverse environment that nurtures talent and rewards success. Our staff come from across the country, not only for our outstanding reputation but because of the culture of innovation and forward thinking that is part of the College community.

Currently the College has a ratio of HE to FE students of 60:40, BA (Hons) and MA through to FE for Extended Diploma courses. In addition, we enjoy partner status with the Open University, which accredits our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with 57% of our staff dedicated to curriculum delivery and are focused on achieving TDAP status. We also have a growing international profile including partnerships in China.

In 2012 we successfully bid to Government to open a mainstream 4–16 school - on a radical new model that places creativity and arts practice at the very heart of the curriculum and of the wider pupil learning experience. The venture was described as ‘an historic moment for education in this country’ by Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of Tate when he officially opened the school in 2015 and has since gone on to receive multiple awards in architecture. www.plymouthschoolofcreativearts.co.uk

Named as Britain's Ocean City, Plymouth is a vibrant hive of activity with a history of discovery and a present of breaking boundaries in rediscovering and reinventing itself.

Having been awarded HEI status, built our award-winning Craft, Design and Fabrication centre, and our recent investment in a Pre-Degree Campus at Palace Court, the College is on an exciting journey to maintain and grow its position as a highly distinctive Art and Design College providing a strong continuum of learning – we welcome innovative people to join us.
