About Bishop Cornish Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School

Bishop Cornish School was opened in 1977 as a voluntary aided primary school in the Diocese of Truro. It was built as a Deanery school and serves the Deanery of East Wivelshire, covering a large area in South-East Cornwall. Our website includes a wealth of information about the school. The Governors' Report to Parents of July 2013, also on the school website, provides further information and links to external websites that host information about the school, including the Department for Education.

The school is set in spacious grounds with stunning views over Dartmoor, the River Tamar, the city of Plymouth and Devonport Dockyard. There are many opportunities for learning and living in this rich and diverse setting that encompasses city, town and village, countryside and moor; rivers, seas and ocean, with rich and inspiring history and an exciting future. The school grounds provide a wonderful resource to support the learning, development and well-being of children and staff, including opportunities for spiritual and emotional development. Our grounds include a woodland area, living willow dome, adventure play equipment, our animal centre and the Bishop Cornish Education Centre. The school building is heated through biomass whilst electricity is generated from photo-voltaic panels.

In 2004 the governing body incorporated the Bishop Cornish Education Centre, a company limited by guarantee that has charitable status. The charity's objectives are concerned with the provision of pre-school education, before and after school care, music education and the promotion of the protection, conservation and enhancement of the environment. Our £400,000 eco-education centre, built on land leased by the Charity within the grounds of the school, was opened by HRH The Countess of Wessex in 2010. The building has been recognised in a number of awards. The Yale University Press publication: Cornwall (Pevsner Architectural Guides: Buildings of England), to be published on 31 May 2014, features the Bishop Cornish Education Centre as an outstanding example of early 21st Century contemporary architecture. The school community's efforts to fundraise and then help construct the building were recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors' South West Community Benefit Award 2010.
